
Volleyball Outlasts NJIT, 3-2

By the fourth game in the Columbia-NJIT volleyball battle, Amalia Viti had 24 kills. She opened and closed the fifth game with kills, and what happened in between was a perfect 8-for-8 hitting performance to cap off her 32-kill, 15-dig double-double.
With a great overall team effort, including 88 digs, 17 blocks, 12 aces and a total of 76 kills, Columbia rallied from a 2-1 deficit, to defeat NJIT 3-2, (30-20, 27-30, 29-31, 30-27, 15-9). It was the Lions' first five-game match of the season.
Viti's 32 kills was more than any two opposing players. The Highlanders were led by Katrina Hornstein with 14 kills and 16 digs.
Natalie Gerling finished with her fourth double-double with 19 kills, 11 digs, four aces and five block assists.
First-year Katie Mitchell continued her strong play with nine kills, seven digs, three aces, one solo block and seven block assists.
Lauren Russell had one solo block and six block assists, while Cassie Ligh added 10 kills, 17 digs and a solo block.
Alex Marchyshyn had 37 assists in three games, while Shannon Hunzicker added 29 assists in two games.
