Win two major cups in the same weekend, each for the first time in many years, and the world takes notice. Particularly the rowing world.
Not only did it notice, it voted. In the online balloting for Crew of the Week last week conducted by rowing's flagship website, Row2K.com, more than 3000 votes were cast, nearly 31% for Columbia. The Lions were selected as Row2K's Crew of the Week.
One week after nearly beating Princeton for the historic Childs Cup, coach Mike Zimmer's varsity heavyweight eight showed that that was anything but a fluke when it defeated Yale and Penn in Derby, Conn., Saturday April 19, to capture the Blackwell Cup for the first time in 67 years.
The next day, Sunday April 20, Columbia traveled to Princeton and beat Navy on the Tigers' Lake Carnegie to win the Maxwell Stevenson Cup for the first time in 45 years.
The double-cup triumph, almost certainly the most significant regular-season weekend in Columbia heavyweight rowing history, earned the Lions 30.8% of the 3108 votes cast in the Row2K Crew of the Week poll. The University of Delaware was the runner-up with 24.9% after its freshman lightweight eight posted a victory over Navy.
Third place, with 15.1%, went to the University of Wisconsin varsity heavyweight eight, which posted two significant wins just two weeks after getting on the water, thanks to the area's late freeze. Three women's crews also were nominated ? the Oregon State varsity eight, the Clemson novice eight and the Rhode Island varsity eight.
The Lions captured another prize Saturday when they beat Boston U. to retain the Doc Lusins Trophy and beat previously-undefeated Syracuse in the same race, at Syracuse. Finishing its spring season with a 10-1 record and five cups, Columbia will now prep for the EARC Sprints Sunday May 18 in Worcester, Mass.
