CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- After their first day of competition for the fall, the Columbia men's tennis team had a "much better" day, according to head coach Bid Goswami, in the second day of the Virginia Invitational.
In the A flight singles, Jon Wong and Mihai Nichifor each won their opening match in the consolation bracket and faced each other in the semifinals. Nichifor ousted Wong, winning 6-4, 6-3 to earn a spot in the consolation finals on Sunday.
In A-2 singles, senior Bogdan Borta won his opening match in the consolation bracket, 6-4, 7-6 over Davidson's Walter Lyons, before falling to Grega Terez of East Tennesse State in a super tiebreaker.
After his first collegiate win, first-year Haig Schneiderman dropped his next match, 6-4, 7-5 to Ncolas Vinel of Virginia Commonwealth. But Schneiderman rebounded with Nichifor to reach the consolation finals of the doubles flight A, set to take place Sunday at 9 a.m.
"We did much better today," said Goswami, the Columbia Tennis Alumni and Friends Head Coach of Men's Tennis. "There were alot of tough matches and alot of good players in this tournament."
Play resumes on Sunday at 9 a.m. in Charlottesville.
