CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Columbia's Mihai Nichifor, who transferred from Manhattan over the summer, won three straight matches in the consolation draw of the "A" flight singles to come out victorious on that side, closing out the final day of the Virginia Invitational.
In the season-opening tournament for the Lions, Nichifor defeated fourth-seeded Keziel Juneau of William and Mary in the consolation final.
In the doubles "A" flight, Nichifor and first-year Haig Schneiderman reached the consolation finals before suffering an 8-1 setback to a doubles tandem from Stetson.
Columbia is back in action next weekend at the ECAC Championships at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., beginning Friday, September 19.
