WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Columbia University men's tennis team traveled to West Point to take on Army on Friday and picked up a 7-0 victory over the Cadets. All six Lions won their singles matches while the team also picked up the doubles point by taking two out of three matches.
Junior co-captain Jon Wong paired with freshman Haig Schneiderman to win the first match of the session, an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles. Senior Bogdan Borta and junior Mihai Nichifor followed that up with an identical 8-4 win to secure the doubles point.
In singles, Wong was victorious in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) at the top spot and Borta also won in two sets at the No. 2 position, 6-2, 6-1. Nichifor won at the third spot in three sets, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1, and first-year Ekin Sezgen picked up his first point in a dual match with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 4. Schneiderman closed his impressive opening day with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 and sophomore Kevin Kung closed out the sweep with a come-from-behind, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 6.
The Lions will continue the spring season on Friday, February 6, as they face Old Dominion at 2 p.m.
