PRINCETON, N.J. -- A week after rowing in driving snow, Columbia raced in nearly perfect weather on Sunday at the Princeton Three-Mile Chase, concluding the fall portion of its season.
The Lions' varsity eight finished 22nd among 55 boats at the Chase, improving on last week's race at the Head of the Charles.
Columbia clocked in at 16:16.183 in the three-mile race, a more straight forward route than the windy Head of the Charles. The start of the race was the normal finish line at the Kingston end of Lake Carnegie and the finish was just before the Washington Road bridge.
"I think the varsity eight had their best performance of the fall," said head coach Melanie Onufrieff after the day's events. "They improved on their performance from the Chase last year and from the Head of the Charles last week. There's still plenty to do but we're pleased with the step forward today."
In the varsity fours, Columbia's "A" boat was just ahead of Georgetown for 17th place out of 45 boats. The Lions finished in 18:07.499, while their "B" boat clocked in at 18:24.421, the "C" boat finished in 20:00.135, and the "D" boat came in at 20:15.001.
In the women's novice eights, Columbia's first-year class had an excellent showing, finishing second out of 16 boats. Sophomore Mackenzie Largay and first-year Samantha Warren capped a solid day with a win in the women's double race in small boats.
"That was a fantastic performance in the small boat," Onufrieff added. "There were good performances all around -- it was a good day overall."
Columbia will open its spring season on March 20 at the Governor's Cup against Florida Tech in Fellesmere, Fla.
