During the 2010-11 season, Columbia men's basketball head coach Kyle Smith will periodically provide insight into the life of a college basketball coach on CollegeChalktalk.com, a site dedicated to inside the lines coverage of college basketball. Below is the beginning of his first entry with a link to the full entry on CollegeChalktalk.com.
As we embark on the 2010-2011 season, I thought it might be interesting to share my journey to becoming a head coach. As often is the case, real life can be stranger than fiction.
For me, I knew I wanted to be a coach since I was in the ninth grade. I had aspirations of becoming a math teacher and high school coach much like my high school coach, Rick Sherley.
As my college eligibility ran out I started working hard on my next step. I thought I could get a graduate assistant job so I could work on my teaching credential and get started in coaching. Beginning at the college level and getting involved in the high school game seemed much more likely back then.
