NEW YORK – For the second consecutive season, Columbia senior co-captain Patrick Foley has earned a spot on the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American first team.
An Academic All-America honoree last year, Foley has fought through an injury-riddled campaign but has started all 14 games he has played. Despite missing four games so far this year, he still ranks second on the team in points per game, averaging just a shade under 10 per game. He leads the team in assists and free throw percentage and the 6-2 Foley also has four blocked shots on the season.
A two-time co-captain, Foley has had a distinguished career in a Lion uniform. Selected as one of 30 national finalists earlier this year for the Lowe's Senior C.L.A.S.S. Award, Foley was Columbia Men's Basketball's first Academic All-American since Shane Cotner in 1978 and the first Columbian in any sport to earn Academic All-America honors since 2006. A history major in Columbia College, Foley currently sports a 3.87 grade point average.
It is the fourth straight year that a Columbia Men's Basketball player earned a place on the Academic All-District I team. In both 2007 and 2008, former Lion center Ben Nwachukwu was named to the All-District first team.
As a member of the All-District first team, Foley is now eligible for Academic All-America consideration for the second straight year. The CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team will be released on February 24.
The Lions are back in action at Levien Gym tomorrow, Friday, February 5 against Brown at 7 p.m. The home weekend, which also marks Men's Basketball alumni weekend, continues on Saturday, Feb. 6 vs. Yale, also at 7 p.m.
Tickets are available online or by calling 888-LIONS-11. Fans who can't make it to Levien Gym can catch all the action online at gocolumbialions.com.
