Women's Rowers Reap Extra Benefits in Retaining Regatta Crown
4/10/2010 7:00:00 PM | Women's Rowing
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Move over, you Democrats and Republicans, and make way for the Lions. That's the Columbia Lions, who established their own degree of control in the city where the battle for it never ends. After winning three of five races Friday, the first day of the George Washington University Regatta, the Columbia women's rowers won nine of 10 on Saturday's final day of competition.
Head coach Melanie Onufrieff was quite pleased by her crews' second straight splendid showing in the prestigious Potomac event. Both last year's Lions, who won all but one event, and the 2010 edition took home the GW Regatta overall championship trophy.
"We rowed well," the coach said. "We had a lot of wins against good competition."
The two-day regatta provided an added benefit in that it provided an actual "instant replay". Since college crews usually compete just once a week, they have to wait until the next weekend's competition before seeing if any adjustments have been successful.
With back-to-back days of racing at George Washington, though, it gave Onufrieff and her rowers the chance to try out any adjustments the very next day.
The second varsity eight and the two varsity fours took top honors, going undefeated for the weekend. All three bested Central Florida on Friday, St. Joseph's Saturday morning, and Georgetown Saturday afternoon. The varsity eight bounced back from a 3.9-second loss to Central Florida with victories over St. Joseph's, by 7.2 seconds, and Georgetown, by 15.3 seconds.
In fact, with the exception of the Lions' third varsity eight, which fell to St. Joe's in Saturday's first event, while topping Navy, all of Columbia's nine winners Saturday won by open water!
The Lions, who are off next weekend, hit the water again Saturday April 24 in the Dunn Bowl regatta at Cornell with Brown and the Big Red.
