NEW YORK –
Seniors Sophie Reiser of women's soccer and Jeff Spear of men's fencing were each
presented the Connie S. Maniatty Outstanding Senior Student-athlete
Award, to highlight the 89th edition of the Varsity C
Celebration: Saluting our Student-athletes at Levien Gymnasium on
Tuesday evening.
Reiser finished her sparkling career as Columbia's all-time leader in assists and became the first women's soccer player to earn first team All-Ivy League accolades three times in her career. As a first-year, she started 13 games and helped the Lions to their first ever Ivy League Championship. As a junior she became only the second player in program history to be named Ivy League Player of the Year. She capped her career with yet another first-team honor in 2009, and is currently pursuing a professional career after being drafted by the Chicago Red Stars of the Women's Professional Soccer league.
Spear was the 2008 NCAA national champion in the sabre, and was a second team All-American in both 2009 and 2010. The three-time first team All-Ivy League honoree went 143-46 throughout his Columbia fencing career and received the NCAA's Elite 88 award at the 2010 National Championships. Also a standout student, Spear was named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America first team in 2009 and earned three consecutive Academic All-Ivy League honors.
The event, which honors all Columbia student-athletes, also featured the
presentation of the Athletics Alumni Awards to Phillip Satow '63CC
(baseball) and Lisa Landau Carnoy '89CC (track and field), and the watch award presentations for the Columbia senior
student-athletes earning the highest cumulative grade-point averages and
at least two varsity letters. Christine Kwon (women's rowing) earned the Marion R. Philips Watch, while Jeff Spear (men's fencing) earned the Dwight D. Eisenhower watch.
In addition, the second-annual
Lions Cup was awarded to the women's basketball team. A competitive event
for all Columbia
University varsity
sports programs that is a means by which student-athletes can compete
on behalf of their teams for points in various categories, women's basketball accumulated 3,970 points and narrowly edged the women's soccer team, which was vying for its second consecutive trophy.
Women's soccer was awarded
the Paul E. Fernandes Community Service Award, given to the varsity
sports program achieving the most significant contributions and notable
service to the University and local communities during an academic year.
Also honored at the event were three members of the athletic department for their many years of dedicated service at Columbia. Associate Athletics Director for
Administration and Finance Al Carlson, Associate Athletics Director for Sports
Medicine and Head Athletics Trainer Jim Gossett, and Associate Athletics Director for Physical
Education Dr. Ken Torrey were all recognized.
