1/28/2011 11:10:00 AM | Women's Basketball
NEW YORK -- After a narrow defeat at the hands of Cornell evened its Ivy League record at 1-1, the Columbia women's basketball team will host Harvard and Dartmouth this weekend at Levien Gymnasium. The Lions will take on the Crimson on Friday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m., then follow it up the next day with a matchup against the Big Green. Live audio and video of both games can be found on gocolumbialions.com, with Lance Medow calling all the action.
LAST TIME OUT
Senior Kathleen Barry had 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds but the co-captain's bid to give the Columbia women's basketball team the lead with two seconds left rimmed out as Cornell exacted a bit of revenge on the Lions with a 53-50 win at Newman Arena on Jan. 22. First-year Taylor Ward had a career-high 12 points -- all in the second half -- and registered six steals in the defeat.
ALL-TIME SERIES vs. HARVARD
Harvard has an overwhelming advantage in the all-time series, winning 47 of the 49 games that the two teams have played since 1985. The Lions are 0-24 at home, as both of their wins have occurred in Cambridge (a 62-56 win in 2000 and a 74-71 victory on Feb. 14, 2009).
ALL-TIME SERIES vs. DARTMOUTH
The Lions swept Dartmouth last season -- including a thrilling 66-59 overtime win on Pink Zone Night at Levien Gymnasium. Overall, the Big Green leads the series -- which dates back to Feb. 1, 1986 -- 39-9.
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON
Harvard enters the contest with a 9-6 overall record and defeated Dartmouth, 82-49, in its only other Ivy League contest. Most recently, the Crimson traveled to the west coast and knocked off Seattle University, 69-55, on Jan. 22. Four players scored in double figures, led by junior Brogan Berry and sophomore Miriam Rutzen who had 16 apiece. Berry leads the team at 14.5 PPG, while sophomore Victoria Lippert is tied with first team All-Ivy League selection Emma Markley at 12.9 PPG. Markley paces the squad at 5.9 rebounds per contest and averages 2.0 blocks a game.
SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN
Dartmouth begins weekend play with a 4-11 ledger, and is 0-1 in conference competition. The Big Green has dropped seven of their last eight contests, with the lone win in the stretch coming against Holy Cross, 66-57, on Jan. 2. Former Ivy League Player of the Year Brittney Smith averaged 13.1 points per game through the first seven contests but has not played in the last eight due to injury. Faziah Steen is the only other Dartmouth player to average double figures at 10.7 PPG.
CLOSE CALLS
The loss to Cornell in Ithaca on Jan. 22 marked the fifth time this season that the Lions have dropped a game decided by four points or less. Columbia fell to San Diego and Monmouth on the road by four and three points, respectively, and fell to Fairfield at home by four and to Lafayette by a point.
I'LL TAKE SECONDS!
First-year Taylor Ward had a career scoring output against Cornell on Jan. 22 -- and all of it came in the second half. After not finding the scoring column in the first half on 0-for-2 shooting, Ward caught fire in the second half and tallied 12 points (4-8 FG and 2-6 3-pt. FG) while playing all 20 minutes. The Oregon City, Ore. native also registered six steals -- three in the first half and three in the second -- to come within one of the all-time single-game record for steals, last set by Judie Lomax '10BC against Yale on Feb. 6, 2010.
ON THE BOARD-ER
Since returning from Hawaii, senior Kathleen Barry has been on a rebounding tear. Barry pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds in the Lions' second game against Cornell on Jan. 22, and has averaged 11.7 rebounds in the three games since the trip to the South Pacific (she missed the contest vs. Lafayette due to injury). The 5-10 guard/forward stands 20 rebounds shy of cracking Columbia's career rebounding top 20.
STEAL CURTAIN
Despite temperatures that hovered around zero in Ithaca on Jan. 22, the Lions turned up the heat defensively and registered a season-best 15 steals against Cornell. Columbia's prior high mark in 2010-11 was 14 against Hawaii on Dec. 28. Last season, the Lions registered 15 steals in each of their contests with the Big Red.
