Cornell Defeats Columbia in Wild Football Shootout in Ithaca

Box Score

ITHACA, N.Y. -- It was all offense all the time at Schoellkopf Field as Cornell used 27 unanswered points in the second half to defeat Columbia 62-41 in a wild Ivy League shootout.

Columbia led by six at the half, but the Big Red's Jeff Matthews threw for nearly 300 yards in the second half to pull away.

Columbia scored first when Griffin Lowry's four-yard touchdown run in the first quarter put Columbia up 7-0.  Cornell answered on the ensuing drive with Luke Tasker's two-yard run knotting the game at 7-7 with just over three minutes left to play.

Brackett capped off an 11-play, 74-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown run to give the Lions a 14-7 lead that lasted all of three minutes when a fumble recovery by Cornell resulted in a Big Red score.

Between both teams, 48 points were scored in the second quarter.  Kurt Williams scored twice, while Hamilton Garner added a score just before the break to put the Lions up 34-28.

The second half was all Cornell, with the Big Red scoring three touchdowns in the third period alone.

Brackett found Williams for a 22-yard strike with just under four minutes left to play in the fourth.

Brackett threw for 409 yards, a career high, and the most since Craig Hormann threw for 417 vs. Penn in 2007.

Williams had a career game as well, with 191 receiving yards, the most since Austin Knowlin totaled 188 in the game vs. Penn in 2007. It was Williams' second 100-yard game this season.  He also totaled three touchdowns, the most since Andrew Kennedy caught three vs. Princeton in 2010.

Mike Stephens added 104 yards receiving, his second 100-yard game this year.

On defense, Marquel Carter totaled a career-high 12 tackles, while Neil Schuster added 10 tackles.  Columbia also totaled four sacks for a total of 39 yards.

Columbia closes out the 2011 season at home next Saturday, November 19 vs. Brown at 12:30 at Robert K. Kraft Field.
