STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Brian Barbour scored 16 of his game-high 23 points in the second half but Stony Brook held on to capture a 67-53 victory over Columbia at Pritchard Gym on Tuesday night.
Stony Brook held Columbia to four points over the first 10 minutes, ultimately opening up a 14-point lead at the five-minute mark.
Five Columbia players picked up two fouls in the first half and 11 Lions saw action in the first 20 minutes as the Seawolves led 32-20 at halftime.
After Stony Brook led by 18 at the 14-minute mark, Columbia began to chip away. The Lions went on an 11-1 run over the next three and a half minutes, capped by a Noah Springwater three ball that cut the Seawolves' lead to 48-40.
The Lions eventually got to within seven points, 52-45, on a three-pointer by Barbour with a hand in his face at the 7:32 mark. But Stony Brook's Leonard Hayes drilled a triple on the next possession to put Stony Brook back in front by 10 points. The Seawolves would remain ahead by double digits for the rest of the game.
Barbour scored his 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field. Alex Rosenberg had eight points and four rebounds for the Lions, which received 23 points from their bench in the game.
Dave Coley led a balanced Stony Brook attack with 12 points. Bryan Dougher added 11. The Seawolves outrebounded the Lions 45-28 and 21-7 on the offensive glass.
Columbia is back in action on Saturday, November 26 at Manhattan in the Bronx at 2 p.m.
