
Volleyball Comes Up Short at Yale, 1-3

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Columbia volleyball team dropped a hard fought four-set match to four-time defending Ivy League Champion Yale at the Lee Amphitheater Saturday Night. The loss came by set scores of 23-25, 23-25, 25-22 and 22-25.
Junior Bailey Springer registered double-digit kills for the fifth straight match and 10th time this season in the defense, finishing her night with 13 kills on a .303 hitting clip. The junior also tallied five digs and three blocks. Sophomore Kesi Neblett contributed 10 kills off a .450 hitting percentage and five blocks. First-year Anja Malsevic also turned in 10 kills while sophomore Zoe Jacobs and Katarina Jovicic recorded nine each.
Sophomore Jennifer Petrovich chipped in her third double-double of the season with 37 assists and 12 digs as senior Charlee Dyroff added to the defense with 27 digs. At the net, Jovicic led the way with eight blocks.
After dropping the first two sets, Columbia (7-9, 3-4 Ivy League) battled back to the the third set thanks in part to a .289 hitting percentage. Jacobs paced the attack with five kills in the frame with Springer and Neblett chipping in two each.
Yale (10-6, 6-1 Ivy League) jumped out to a 20-12 advantage in the fourth, but the Lions came charing back, cutting the lead to five, 20-15. The Bulldogs built onto their lead and had match point, but Columbia climbed back with a 5-0 stretch that included two blocks by Jovicic and junior Alex Reale and Springer's 13th kill of the night to move the score to 24-22. The Lions could not continue its rally, however, as Yale's Mollie Rogers put the set away, 25-22, and gave the host the match.
Columbia will look to get back in the win column when it makes the trip to its Empire State Rival Cornell Saturday, Oct. 24. The 2 p.m. match can be seen live on The Ivy League Digital Network.
