NEWARK, Del. – The Columbia field hockey team came away with a stunning, 2-1 win over Delaware Sunday to conclude non-conference play. Trailing 1-0 with under five minutes to go, the Lions (10-4) scored twice in less than two minutes to earn its fourth consecutive victory, all of the comeback variety.
Once again, it was Christina Freibott playing the role of hero, netting the game winner on a redirection off of a shot from Zoe Blake with 2:13 to go in regulation.
"Christina had a stellar weekend with four goals and an assist during a challenging back-to-back weekend," head coach Marybeth Freeman said. "Lauren Skudalski exemplified quality leadership through her organization in the backfield and making three defensive saves in these two games. Whitney Hartstone played solid and consistent and to have her as a strong presence is a valued presence to our team."
"I could not be more proud of this group of women," Freeman continued. "They continue to find a way to get it done."
After playing to a scoreless first half, Jacki Coveleski scored off the Blue Hens' (9-6) 11th corner of the game to give Delaware the 1-0 advantage.
Columbia was held to just five shots in the first 65 minutes, but the offense came through when it mattered most.
Meredith Kalberer provided the equalizer, scoring her first of the season after picking up a loose ball off a scrum in front of the net in the 67th minute.
The Lions continued to attack after tying the score and drew a penalty corner to set up Freibott's game-winner.
Kimberly Pianucci came up big with nine saves to improve to 9-4 on the year.
"Kimmie made some of the best saves I have seen all year and her experience in goal really came through," stated Freeman.
Shots were 13-7 in favor of Delaware and Columbia was held to six penalty corners, four off its season average.
The Lions host Dartmouth on Sunday, October 26 in its final home game of the season. Prior to the game, Columbia will honor seniors Zoe Blake, Caroline Donnal, Kyle Marsh, Ellie Robertson, Marlee Silverstein and Lauren Skudalski.
