Trio Advances to Round of 32 at Women's Tennis USTA/ITA Northeast Regional

NEW HAVE, Conn. - A trio of Columbia women's tennis players captured two single victories on Saturday at the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships at Yale's Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center to remain in the mix and advance through to the round of 32. Rima Asatrian, Tina Jiang and Kanika Vaidya, who are seeded in the tournament received byes in the first round, all moved on.
In the round of 64 No. 102 Jiang met Buffalo's Margarita Kotok who was no match for the Lions' sophomore. Jiang cruised past Kotok, 6-3, 6-4, and is set to meet Anna Woosley of Massachusetts in the round of 32. Vaidya, the tournament's top seed and 85th-ranked singles player in the ITA, cruised past LIU's Sanne Louwers, 6-1, 6-0. The junior will meet Stony Brook's Polina Movchan on the court in the third round Sunday. Asatrian held on in a back-and-forth battle against Princeton's Caroline Joyce, 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-4, to advance. The rookie will take the court against Brown Dani Lord.
First-year Adi Milstein, who earned a spot in the main draw vie two victories in the qualifying draw, continued her winning ways in the first round of the main draw by posting a 6-1, 6-3, victory over Fairfield's Sarah Stuhlman. Milstein's run was halted in the second round, however, as the first-year fell to Valeria Salazar of Syracuse 6-1, 7-5.
Milstein's classmate Alexandra Solovyev along with senior Crystal Leung also received byes in the first round of competition and were eliminated in the second round. Solovyev was defeated by Katya Vasilyev of Boston College, 6-2, 6-4. Leung was also bested by an Eagle as Columbia's co-captain dropped a 62-, 3-6, 6-2 decision to Emily Safron.
The Northeast Regionals will continue Sunday on Yale's campus with the round of 32 matches set to begin at 10 a.m.
