ITHACA, N.Y. - The Columbia volleyball team was taken five sets by Cornell Saturday afternoon at Newman Arena, but just as they did the four other times this season the Lions came out on bottom, 2-3. The Big Red took the match by set scores of 18-25, 25-23, 25-21, 21-25 and 18-20.
Five Lions recorded double-digit kills with Bailey Springer's 18 leading the charge. Carla Dibbs, Zoe Jacobs, Katarina Jovicic and Kesi Neblett contributed 10 kills each with Dibbs posting a career-high along the way.
Springer added 15 digs to lead a pride of Lions on the defensive side of the net as six different players posted double-digit digs. The 18-kill, 15-dig performance marks the junior's third double-double of the year and 11th of her career. Cassie Wes and Sarah Gurbach contributed career-highs with 28 digs and 12 digs, respectively. Atlanta Moye-McLaren (16 digs) and Jennifer Petrovich (20 digs), meanwhile, turned in season-best numbers. Charlee Dyroff chipped in 11 digs as her co-captain Jovicic paced Columbia (7-10, 3-5 Ivy League) at the net with eight blocks. Petrovich also passed out 50 assists, which combined with her dig effort, accounts for her fourth double-double of the season and 14th of her career.
Maddy Sroufe's 20 kills paced Cornell (4-14, 1-7 Ivy League).
Cornell took the first set, 18-25, before Columbia bounced back to take a 2-1 lead in the match. With its back against the wall, the Big Red evened the score with a 21-25 victory in the fourth frame to force the match to go the distance.
In the final set the Lions jumped out to an 8-3 lead, but the Big Red clawed at the advantaged and leveled the score at 9-9. The team's traded points, but it was the hosts completed the comeback with back-to-back kills, 20-18.
The Lions look to get back in the win column as they return to Morningside Heights next weekend for matches against Princeton and Penn. The Lions host the Tigers on Friday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m., before welcoming in the Quakers Saturday, Nov. 1 at 5 p.m.
