HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Hofstra erased a pair of two-goal deficits to come away with a 4-3 overtime win over the Columbia field hockey team Sunday. All seven goals in the game were set up by penalty corners.
Zoe Blake scored twice in the contest to bring her team-leading total to 10 goals on the year.
The Lions (6-4) blitzed the Pride (8-5), scoring twice in the opening five minutes to race out to a 2-0 advantage. Blake ripped home a shot off a feed from Rebecca Pope just 1:08 into the contest. Pope extended the margin with a shot that found the back of the net after Christina Freibott settled the insert from Kyle Marsh in the 5th minute.
Despite controlling much of the first half, Hofstra drew a penalty corner of its own as time expired in the first half. The Pride kept the ball in the scoring area after the horn sounded and Claudia Marin-Samper cut the deficit in half with her 10th goal of the year.
Blake restored the two-goal advantage just four minutes into the second stanza with Freibott and Marsh earning the assists on the play.
However, Marin-Samper struck again under two minutes later with a deflection goal to make it 3-2. In the 48th minute, Hofstra netted the equalizer when Marin-Samper found Charlotte Loehr for the score.
Columbia responded by recording the next five shots, but the Pride defense was up to the task. Hofstra also came up empty on a pair of scoring chances in the closing minute as the contest went to the extra session.
Off the bat, the Pride marched on the attack and set up another penalty corner in the 72nd minute. Lions' goalkeeper Kimberly Pianucci made two initial saves, but Stella Schoen corralled the loose ball and put it in on the third try to complete the comeback.
The Lions return to the Baker Athletics Complex Friday, October 10 to take on Towson for a 3 p.m. matinee.
