Field Hockey Tops Yale, Keeps Ivy League Lead

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The stage is set for a huge final weekend of the regular season after the Columbia field hockey team downed Yale, 4-0, Saturday afternoon to remain atop of the Ivy League standings. The Lions (12-4, 5-1) are tied with Princeton, but hold the tiebreaker against the Tigers after beating them in a head-to-head matchup.

Columbia has now won six-straight games, matching the longest winning streak in program history set in 2012. The Lions play at Harvard on Saturday, Nov. 8, with an Ivy League title and a trip to the NCAA Championships on the line. The game can be seen live on the Ivy League Digital Network.

Ivy League Player of the Year candidate Christina Freibott set a new program single-season record for points in a season after posting two goals and an assist. Her point total is now up to 41, breaking the old mark of 36, previously set by Nikki Campbell in 2000.

The reigning Ivy League Co-Player of the Week, Kimberly Pianucci made seven saves to pick up her 11th victory of the year.

Zoe Blake netted the go-ahead goal just 12 minutes into the contest off a penalty corner for her 13th of the season. Seven minutes later, Freibott capitalized on a set-piece to extend her personal point streak to 10.

The Bulldogs (2-14, 0-6) had a couple of shot attempts to end the frame, but Pianucci made a pair of saves to keep it 2-0 at the break.

In the second frame, Katie Ruesterholz tacked on an insurance goal off a pass from Freibott in the 40th minute. Freibott after being the recipient of a feed from Ruesterholz to ice the game with a tally shortly after.

Yale applied more pressure, but Pianucci thwarted off the final five attempts on target to preserve the shutout, her second of the year.

Shots finished 11-8 in favor of the Bulldogs, while Yale held Columbia to just four corners, six below its season average.
