QUICK HITS
COLUMBIA'S STATUS
The Lions begin their 114th season this Friday in the first game of a non-conference home-and-home series with Stony Brook.
SCOUTING THE SEAWOLVES
Stony Brook will unveil the brand new, 4,000-seat Island Federal Credit Union Arena against the Lions on Friday evening. The Seawolves are preseason favorite in the America East despite not boasting a senior on the roster, although they do return reigning America East Player of the Year Jameel Warney. Stony Brook has recorded 20 or more wins in each of the last three seasons and has reached the postseason in four-straight campaigns. In 2013-14, the Seawolves went 23-11 overall and qualified for the CBI.
LET'S GET IT STARTED
Columbia is 76-37 all-time in season openers. Last year, Columbia dispatched UMES, 73-54, to kick off the 2013-14 campaign.
COLUMBIA VS. THE AMERICA EAST
Against teams currently in the America East, the Lions hold a record of 14-17. Columbia' s most common opponent is the Seawolves, who they have played 12 times.
UP FOR A CHALLENGE
Columbia will play eight games against teams that are widely projected as NCAA Tournament squads in the preseason. The Lions face Stony Brook twice - the early favorite in the America East, American - an NCAA tourney team from the Patirot League, Kenucky - the preseason No. 1 team in the nation, Hofstra - the preseason pick in the CAA, UConn - the defending national champion, and Harvard twice - the prohibitive No. 1 team in the Ivy League.
THE LIONS' DEN
Last season, Columbia won 14 games in Levien Gymnasium, the most since the building opened its doors in 1974. In the Kyle Smith era, the Lions are 38-21 in front of their home fans.
