STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook's Rayshaun McGrew scored a go-ahead bucket with seven seconds remaining to defeat the Columbia men's basketball team, 57-56, on opening night. Junior Maodo Lo scored a game-high 19 points in the defeat.
Lo started the Lions' offense, scoring 10 quick points and factoring on the other two Columbia field goals with assists in the opening 6:39 to put the Lions on top, 15-7.
After a put-back by Isaac Cohen gave Columbia an eight-point cushion, both teams went scoreless for a span of nearly four minutes. The Lions broke the drought with a trio of 3-pointers, two from Steve Frankoski, and a spinning layup from Lo gave Columbia its largest lead of the night, 28-12, with 5:29 left.
The Seawolves answered with a 13-3 run to pull within 35-21 at the half.
The Lions shot 50-percent from the floor and were 7-of-14 from downtown in the first 20 minutes, but committed eight turnovers to keep Stony Brook in the game.
Lo opened the scoring in the second frame with a triple in front of the Columbia bench, but six unanswered points by the Seawolves made it 36-33 with 16:05 to go, forcing Kyle Smith to use a timeout.
A Chris McComber long-ball from top of the key after the timeout stemmed the tide and Frankoski scored five in a row during a mini 7-2 spurt to make it 46-40 with 12:09 left in regulation. A few moments later, Cory Osetkowski gave the Lions a big boost with a block, two offensive boards and a strong post move to keep the Lions up, 49-42, with 8:54 on the clock.
However, Stony Brook would not go away and Carson Puriefoy converted a pair of mid-range floaters to cut its deficit to 51-48 with 5:22 left. Columbia remained in front until the final 13 seconds. Leading 56-54 with one minute remaining, Osetkowski missed a hook shot as the shot clock was winding down, and Cohen grabbed an offensive rebound with 50 seconds remaining. Lo held the ball until late in the shot clock and missed a jumper leading to a Stony Brook rebound.
Rayshaun McGrew was fouled with 13 seconds remaining, giving the Seawolves a chance to tie. McGrew made the first and missed the second and Columbia appeared to get the defensive board, but Osetkowski was called for a foul. Jameel Warney missed a pair, but the Seawolves were able to grab the offensive rebound on two separate shots. McGrew scored a put-back with seven seconds left to play. The Lions pushed the ball and Lo missed a jumper as time expired, giving Stony Brook the one-point win, 57-56.
Columbia shot 43.8 percent from the floor and 41.7 percent from the three to Stony Brook's 40.7 from the floor and 33.3 from behind the arc. The Seawolves led 37-34 on the boards, particularly in offensive rebounds, where they held a 15-9 advantage.
McComber finished with 13 points, while Frankoski added 11. Cohen chipped in four points, eight rebounds, six assists and a steal in 36 minutes of play.
The Lions will return to Levien Gymnasium to face Wagner on Tuesday, November 18 at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by clicking here.
