CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Columbia volleyball team suffered a straight set loss Friday night as Harvard downed the Lions by set scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-19.
Columbia (7-15, 3-10 Ivy League) received a seven-kill effort from a trio of Lions; Carla Dibbs, Kesi Neblett and Bailey Springer. Alex Andrejev and Jennifer Petrovich split the setting responsibilities and dished out 16 assists each.
On the defensive side of the net Cassie Wes led the charge with 16 digs as Katarina Jovicic paced Columbia at the net for the 13th time this season with five blocks, but it was not enough as Harvard (18-4, 11-2 Ivy League) combated to hit .264 on the night. Grace Weghorst scored a match-high 11 kills as Corrine Bain and Jennifer Shults contributed eight kills apiece.
Following a see-saw opening Harvard rattled off four straight points to jump ahead 10-6. Out of the break Columbia could not formulate a rally as it fell behind 12-18. The Lions did not go down without a fight, however, as a Springer kill sparked a late push and pulled within six off back-to-back tallies by Zoe Jacobs. The Crimson answered the kills with two of its own to seal the 25-17 first set win.
Neblett's fifth kill of the night put Columbia on top for the first time in the match and in the second set, 11-10. The lead was short lived as Harvard went on a 5-0 run to go ahead 15-11 and cruised to a 25-18 second set victory.
In the third Columbia held onto an early edge as Anja Malesevic pushed the score to 9-7. Harvard surged ahead again however as they took a 15-10 advantage that blossomed into a 25-19 triumph that seal the Lions' setback.
Columbia concludes it season tomorrow at Dartmouth at 5 p.m.
