Fencing Opens Season With Unbeaten Records at Columbia Invitational

NEW YORK - The Columbia fencing programs opened their 2014-15 seasons Friday night and kept their records perfect as the Lions downed all six of their opponents at the Columbia Invitational.
The men's team bested Stevens, NJIT, and Florida, while the women also posted victories over the Highlanders and Gators and took down Fairleigh Dickinson.
Michael Costin competed against each opponent and only dropped a single bout to post an 8-1 mark in the saber while John Avendano and Gabe Canaux recorded 5-1 ledgers in the foil and epee, resepectively. On the women's strip a number of Lions went undefeated with Sara Taffel's 9-0 record in the foil leading the way. Taffel's weaponmates Jackie Durbovich and Margaret Lu also notched unblemished marks as they each went 6-0. In the saber Brittin Boenning (5-0) went unbeaten as did epeeist Natalie Gegan (3-0).
Columbia's men opened the invitational with a 21-6 victory over Stevens while the women topped FDU 22-5.
In the second round the hosts met NJIT and continued to cruise to victories. cruised past NJIT. Despite dropping the foil 4-5, the men notched 7-2 marks in the saber and epee, respectively to take the match 18-9. The women on the other hand swept the foil (9-0) versus the Highlanders and were credited nine points in the saber due to an incomplete NJIT team to earn a 24-3 decision.
Both teams wrapped up the event with decisive wins over Florida. The men claimed a 23-4 victory over the Gators and the women breezed to a 26-1 win.
The Lions will return to action following the holidays when Columbia competes on the defending national champions' strips at the Penn State Invitational. The Lions will meet Temple, Haverford, North Carolina, the Nittany Lions, Drew and Duke Saturday, Jan. 17.
