No. 9 Columbia Opens Season With Trips To Drexel and Franklin & Marshall

NEW YORK – The No. 9 Columbia women's squash team will spend opening weekend in the state of Pennsylvania taking on two top-20 teams. On Saturday, Nov. 22 at 1 p.m., the Lions will face No. 13 Drexel in Philadelphia. Columbia will trek to Lancaster on Sunday, Nov. 23 to take on No. 17 Franklin & Marshall for a 12 p.m. match.
ABOUT THE LIONS: The Lions capped last season with an 8-7 overall record for its second winning season in program history and its first Ivy League victory. Columbia earned a No. 10 final national ranking, following a runner-up finish in the Kurtz Cup (B Division) of the CSA National Championships.
From last season's starting nine, the Lions only lost two players. Columbia returns Colette Sultana who capped an impressive performance in her first trip to the College Squash Association Individual National Championships with a runner-up finish in the consolation bracket of the Holleran Cup.
The Lions also return junior Catherine Jenkins who led Columbia with a 10-4 record at the No. 5 and 6 positions. Seniors Alisha Maity and Kate Calihan will both serve as co-captains for Columbia this season.
INSIDE THE SERIES: Columbia and Drexel will meet for the first time in program history on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions lead the all-time series 3-0 over Franklin & Marshall heading into Sunday's noon match. In the last two meetings, the Lions have blanked the Diplomats 9-0.
ABOUT DREXEL: The Dragons opened the season on Wednesday, Nov. 19 with a trek to Franklin & Marshall. Drexel was defeated 2-7 by an unbeaten Diplomat team to drop to 0-1 to begin the year. Saturday's match against the Lions will be the Dragon's home opener and a first of three straight matches against Ivy League opponents.

ABOUT FRANKLIN & MARSHALL: The Diplomats are off to a 3-0 start to the season after taking down Drexel (7-2) in their home opener on Nov. 19. The home win comes after two road victories over Haverford (9-0) and Bowdin (8-1) last weekend. The Lions will be the second of two team matches for Franklin and Marshall on Sunday, as they face Dickinson in the morning before playing Columbia at noon.
