NEW YORK – The Columbia men's basketball team used a career-high 19 points from first-year Kyle Castlin to pick up 57-47 victory Tuesday night. Castlin excelled from the free-throw line, knocking down 13-of-14 attempts.
Junior Isaac Cohen added six points, grabbed 10 rebounds and handed out five assists. Maodo Lo posted 12 points.
The teams traded the lead four times over the first 13 minutes of the half until the Lions started driving the lane and getting to the foul line. Despite being held without a field goal for nearly five minutes, Columbia went 7-of-8 from the line and took its largest lead of the period, 28-18, after a Castlin 3-pointer with 2:04 before the break.
The Knights (2-2) finished the half strong with a mini 7-1 run to pull within 29-25 at the half.
Fairleigh Dickinson continued to hang around in the second half, trimming the margin to 34-33 at the 15:59 mark. However, back-to-back three's by Castlin and Lo pushed the advantage back up to seven just under two minutes later.
Columbia then went scoreless for a span of 6:47 and four points from the Knights' Xavier Harris cut the deficit to 40-39 with 7:32 to play.
Noah Springwater ended the drought with a 3-pointer from the right corner to spark a 10-2 spurt to build the lead back up to 50-41 with 2:48 on the clock. From there, the Lions hit their free throws down the stretch to hang on for the win.
Columbia shot just 31.8-percent from the floor, but held FDU to 36.4-percent shooting. The Lions held a 35-28 edge on the glass, leading to 13 second-chance points, and were 22-of-28 from the charity stripe.
Harris scored 10 of his team-high 12 points in the second half and pulled down seven boards to lead the Knights.
The Lions will host defending Patriot League Champs American on Saturday, November 29 at 4 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by clicking here. The game will also be broadcast live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
