
Three Lions Post Double-Doubles in Volleyball?s 3-1 Loss to Yale

NEW YORK - Three Columbia volleyball players contributed double-double efforts Friday night as the Lions lost to Yale, 3-1, at Levien Gymnasium. The defeated came by set scores of 20-25, 24-26, 25-16 and 18-25.
For the seventh time this season, Jennifer Petrovich turned in a double-double with assists and digs as the sophomore contributed 46 handouts and 18 digs, respectively. Junior Bailey Springer led the Columbia's (7-13, 3-8 Ivy League) offense with 16 kills and contributed 12 digs for her four double-double of the season while sophomore Zoe Jacob added her second career double-double with an 11-kill, 11-dig effort.
Yale (13-7, 9-2 Ivy League) received double-double performances from two Bulldogs. Mollie Rogers led the way with 18 kills and 16 digs as Kelly Johnson had 14 kills and 12 digs to her credit.
Early in the first set the Lions led 4-2 after two Jacobs' kills were sent in the bleachers by Bulldogs' receivers. After trading points, Yale rolled on a 5-1 run topped off by two straight kills to take an 11-9 edge. The Bulldogs answered a service errors that ended their own run with five unanswered scores to leap out to a 16-10 advantage forcing Columbia to take a timeout. Out of the break it was the Lions turn to run. Columbia went on a 10-4 stretch that leveled the set at 20-all. Out of its own timeout, Yale rolled to a 25-20 victory.
In the second stanza that featured 14 ties it was the Bulldogs that prevailed. At 16-16, Springer threw down a kill to put the Lions ahead by one. The score flip flopped before Yale built momentum off an ace and set up set-point, 24-19. With their backs against the wall the Lions answered. Jacobs sandwiched two kills around a score by Katarina Jovicic to cut the deficit to 22-24. The two combined for a block to equalize the frame at 24-all. Columbia's comeback would not hold out, however, Yale coupled back-to-back points to seal the 26-24 win.
Close action opened the third set, but two 4-1 runs by Columbia put the host ahead 19-13 to force Yale's second timeout. Momentum was not lost out of the break as the Lions went onto score six of the final nine points to take the set 25-16 and stay alive in the match.
Yale jumped out to a 10-5 advantage before Columbia used a 3-0 spurt to climb back. A Springer kill that tied the stanza, 15-15, made things interesting, but the Bulldogs came out of their timeout and cruised to a 25-18 victory to take the match.
Columbia closes the home portion of its schedule tomorrow at 5 p.m., when the Lions welcome Brown to Levien for Senior Night.
