Columbia Wraps Up Competition At Midlands

EVANSTON, Ill. - In the second day of competition, Columbia first-year Garrett Ryan earned a seventh place finish in the heavyweight division, while Tyrel White lost his only match at 165 in the 52nd Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships.
285 - Ryan
In his first match of the day, Ryan scored a first round takedown on Brock Horwath of Wisconsin with only three seconds left in the round. The first-year was able to rack up the riding time in the second period, before taking the bottom position in the third. Horwath was unable to move Ryan in the final period, preserving a 2-0 win for Columbia.
Against Dawson Peck of Maryland in his second match, Ryan was unable to get points back after being taken down in the first round. Neither wrestler scored a point in the second and third rounds, leading to Peck's 2-0 victory.
In the last Columbia match of the day, Ryan earned a chance to claim seventh place against Jake Henderson of Old Dominion. Ryan impressed on his way out, earning a 10-1 major decision over the seven seed in the tournament.
The first-year now sits at 13-8 on the season, after posting four wins at the Midlands.
165 - White
White dropped his only match today, unable to overcome four first period points by Cal State Bakersfield's Adam Fierro. The Columbia first-year tallied a takedown in the third period, but time ran out with him trailing, 4-2.
By posting four wins at the Midlands, White improved his record to 13-9 on the season.
Columbia finished the tournament in 24th place with 19.5 points. In total, 57 teams were represented at the Midlands this year.
