BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – The Columbia men's basketball team found themselves in an early hole and could not quite recover in a 72-64 defeat at St. Francis Brooklyn Tuesday night. Four Lions (7-5) scored in double-figures, led by Maodo Lo's 17.
Kyle Castlin posted 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor, while Isaac Cohen and Steve Frankoski each netted 11.
Brent Jones scored five of his team's first nine points to help the Terriers (6-7) get off to a 9-4 lead with 16:19 left in the period. The Lions pulled within one with 13:10 remaining, but did not record a field goal over the next 5:49, but still just trailed, 20-13.
The Terriers' Yunus Hopkinson answered with a 3-pointer on the other end and took their largest lead of the half, 34-22, at the 1:28 mark. Castlin's runner in the lane with 58 seconds left made it a 10-point game at intermission.
Frankoski netted the first seven points of the second half, but St. Francis continued to flourish on the offensive ends and pushed the margin to 14 with 14:39 remaining.
Columbia tried to mount a comeback with Cohen and Lo doing the bulk of the scoring. However, the Lions could only close within seven late in the contest.
Strong shooting continued for Columbia, who shot 51 percent from the floor for the game. However, the Lions committed 15 turnovers, leading to 22 Terrier points.
Jones posted a game-high 22 points. Jalen Cannon notched 15 points and 12 rebounds for St. Francis.
Columbia will ring in 2015 by wrapping up its non-conference home-and-home series with Stony Brook in Levien Gymnasium on Tuesday, January 6 at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available for the game and can be purchased by clicking here.
