NEW YORK - Crystal Leung and Amy Li have been designated as the co-captains for the 2014-2015 Columbia women's tennis campaign, as announced by eighth year head coach Ilene Weintraub. The duo, which played doubles together in the spring of 2013, will lead a talented group consisting of seven returners and five first-years.
“We have a unique situation this year having graduated three players from our starting line-up and added five first-years,” said Weintraub. “Crystal and Amy will help get our new players to buy in to our 'blue collar' kind of culture where we believe we are going to out work everyone around us. The other aspect they will lead the pack on is getting everyone to play for each other. They will lead by example and support everything we are trying to do. With their leadership combined with our young, hungry and talented players, there is no limit to what we can achieve.”
Leung, a senior from Houston, Texas, looks to lead by example once again after a very successful 2013-2014 season that culminated in an invite to the NCAA Doubles Championship with partner Tina Jiang. Last season Leung and Jiang went undefeated in Ivy League play, boasting an overall 15-1 record to finish the year ranked 47th nationally. On the singles court, Leung went 20-7 overall in the No. 2 and No. 4 slots as an integral part of the 2014 Lions historic season.
Li, a senior hailing from Acton, Massachusetts, will be an important leader for the Lions both on and off the court. Li has posted a 17-10 record throughout her three seasons in Columbia Blue and looks to return to her winning ways this season. Off the court, Li excels in the classroom and will be an excellent mentor for the five incoming recruits that are getting acquainted with the rigor of Columbia's academics.
The Lions open their season at the Mizzou Tennis Invite in Kansas City, Missouri. The weekend-long tournament beginning this Friday, Sept. 19
