STORRS, Conn. – In its second match at the UConn Classic, the Columbia Volleyball team was upended by Hofstra, 3-0, Saturday morning at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion. The loss came by set scores of 19-25, 23-25 and 20-25.
Junior Alex Reale scored nine kills on a .375 hitting percentage as junior Bailey Springer and first-year Carla Dibbs chipped in seven kills and six kills, respectively. Newcomer Alex Andrejev played as Columbia's (3-5) primary setter and dished out 15 assists. Sophomore Cassie Wes led the Lions on defense with 12 digs, while junior Katarina Jovicic added three blocks.
Kelsie Wills and Emily Burke notched 13 kills and 11 kills each with Burke hitting a .529 to help Hofstra move to 11-2 on the season.
The Pride jumped out to an early 4-1 lead that stretched out to a 15-9 lead at the halfway point in the first frame. The Lions were unable to formulate a rally as Hofstra tallied six of the final seven points to take the set, 25-19.
In the second frame it was Columbia that took the early 4-1 lead before the Pride inched back and tied the set at 9-9. The score bounced back and forth before three straight points by the Lions including a kill and block by Springer put Columbia ahead, 18-15. Hofstra answered the three-point run with a four-point stretch of its own to knot the stanza at 20-all. From there the score would equal three more times before the Pride put together back-to-back points to earn the 25-23 set win.
The Lions fell behind in the final set, 6-2, before it clawed back within two, 11-9, off a block by first-year Anja Malesevic. The set remained tight throughout and a Jovicic tally evened the score at 17-17, but it wouldn't be enough as Hofstra went on to seal the sweep with a 25-20 victory in set three.
Columbia returns to Connecticut's hardwood this evening for a 5 p.m. match against Bryant to conclude its non-conference schedule.
