PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Columbia field hockey team saw its three-game win streak snapped by Providence after an 8-0 defeat Sunday.
“Clearly our performance today is not indicative of the style of play we want to exhibit,” head coach Marybeth Freeman said. “We were off our game today.”
The Friars (5-3) wasted no time getting on the board after Steph Guglielmo pounced on a failed clearing attempt by Kimberly Pianucci just 1:03 into the contest.
Providence scored twice more in the opening 10 minutes and held a commanding 5-0 lead heading into the half.
It was the same story in the second half for the Friars as they tacked on three more scores to go on for the win.
Sophomore Katie Ruesterholz had three shots for the Lions (4-2). Columbia held an 8-6 edge on corners, but unlike yesterday's game against Brown, were not able to capitalize.
“We all need to hold ourselves accountable for our performance today,” Freeman stated. “I know we will come back from this and be stronger for our upcoming games.”
“Tough lesson to learn, but message received.”
The Lions return home next Saturday, Sep. 27, when they face Cornell for an Ivy League contest at 12 p.m.
