POSTGAME INTERVIEW WITH MARYBETH FREEMAN
POSTGAME INTERVIEW WITH ZOE BLAKE
NEW YORK – The Columbia field hockey team lit the lamp eight times, tying a program single-game record, in an 8-1 triumph of Georgetown Sunday. Junior Christina Freibott posted a pair of assists, bringing her career total to 21 to move into a tie with Dana Zullo '03 and Christine Buszczak '09 for the all-time record.
Kyle Marsh notched two goals and two assists, while Zoe Blake and Katie Ruesterholz each scored twice.
Marsh opened the scoring with a second-chance opportunity in the seventh minute. Off a penalty corner, the Lions' (5-3) shot was deflected away onto the stick of the senior, who came up with her second of the year.
In the 23rd minute, Blake did what she does best, burying a set-shot off the penalty corner to give Columbia a 2-0 advantage.
The Lions finished the half strong, scoring twice in the final five minutes of the frame. A slick spin-move by Leah Matthews opened things up for Caroline Donnal on the leftside of the goal, who received the pass and slipped one by the Hoyas (4-5) goalkeeper. Columbia drew another penalty corner as time expired and Blake sniped one high into the cage to give the Lions a 4-0 cushion heading into the locker room.
Columbia came out of the gates strong, once again, in the second half and Ruesterholz made a strong drive down the left side to force the netminder away from the goal and put one into the empty net in the 38th minute.
Ruesterholz was in the middle of things again to set up Marsh's second goal of the game in the 53rd minute. Her centering pass found an open Marsh, who dove while shooting for the highlight-reel tally.
Georgetown broke up the shutout bid in the 59th minute, but the Lions would tack on two more – Ruesterholz' second and a penalty corner finish by Rebecca Pope – to finish things off.
The win was also the most lopsided for Columbia since an 8-1 romp of St. Francis (Pa.) on Sep. 10, 2006.
With Freibott's 10 assists on the year, she sits just one behind Buszczak for the single-season mark of 11 set in 2008.
The Lions return to action Friday, Oct. 3 when they welcome Princeton to the Baker Athletics Complex for a 6 p.m. contest.
