NEW YORK - The Columbia men's basketball team fell to Stony Brook, 70-61, at Levien Gymnasium Tuesday night. Steve Frankoski led the Lions with 16 points including 4-of-6 shooting from 3-point range.
Cory Osetkowski tallied 14 points and five rebounds, while Isaac Cohen was close to a triple-double, scoring eight points, while adding 10 rebounds and nine assists.
The Columbia defense was unable to contain Jameel Warney, who paced the Seawolves with a game-high 25 points on 12-of-16 shooting, and 13 rebounds. Rayshaun McGrew and Carson Puriefoy were also in double-figures for the Seawolves (10-6), netting 15 and 13 points, respectfully.
On the other end of the floor, Stony Brook's defense was strong on the Ivy League's leading scorer, Maodo Lo, who finished with just seven points on the night.
The first half featured strong post play from Warney, who had 14 points in the opening stanza, and Osetkowski, who racked up 11 points. The teams went back-and-forth nearly the entire frame and featured nine lead changes to go with six ties.
Frankoski buried a corner 3-pointer with 2:15 left in the half to give the Lions a 29-28 lead, but Warney scored the final four points of the half to put Stony Brook on top by three at the intermission.
The Seawolves extended the run with the first four points of the second half to take a 36-29 lead just under two minutes in. A pair of free throws by Frankoski trimmed the margin to 40-38 at the 13:02 mark. However, that would be as close as Columbia would come.
Stony Brook rattled off seven-straight to balloon its lead up to 50-41 and held off the Lions the rest of the way by taking care of the ball and knocking down free throws down the stretch.
With the loss, Columbia falls to 7-6 on the season. The Lions have one more crack at a non-conference opponent, when Central Pennsylvania comes to Morningside Heights for a 7 p.m. contest on Saturday.
