NEW YORK – The Columbia men's basketball team held off a late charge from Robert Morris to come away with a 78-71 victory Monday afternoon. Senior Maodo Lo tied the Levien Gymnasium record with eight made 3-pointers and finished with 26 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Lo tied the mark set initially by Dragutin Kravic, who also connected eight times from downtown against Yale on Mar. 6, 2004.
The Lions (8-5) extended their winning streak to four games and will have 14 days off between games due to final exams and the holidays.
Columbia led for the majority of the contest, but could not quite put away the Colonials (1-9). After Lukas Meisner buried a trey from the left corner to put the Lions up 62-52 with 6:35 to play, RMU went on a 7-2 run to pull within three at the 2:45 marker.
An alley-oop dunk from Meisner to reigning Ivy League Player of the Week, Lukas Meisner and free throw by Grant Mullins brought the lead back up to 70-63 with 44 seconds left. However, the Colonials stormed back with a quick 8-2 run to cut the lead to 72-71 at the 25 second juncture.
Mullins, who went 11-of-12 from the line for 17 points, knocked down two more clutch free throws and Lo came up with a steal on the defensive end to effectively preserve the win.
In the first half, Lo buried four treys in the opening 6:30 to give Columbia a 16-11 lead. The Colonials trimmed their deficit to two with 10:30 to play in the frame, but the Lions answered with 11 straight to make it 29-16 at the 7:41 mark and took a 37-27 cushion into the locker room.
Mullins added seven assists and Columbia dished out 19 as a team on 22 made field goals. Petrasek registered 13 points and six rebounds. Kyle Castlin posted 14 points and four rebounds.
The Lions are back in action Monday, Dec. 28 against Howard at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by clicking here. Fans can also catch the action live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
