NEW YORK – Columbia and Saint Joseph's went toe-to-toe with the Hawks coming away with an 80-78 victory in the first-ever meeting between the schools. Maodo Lo and Alex Rosenberg each scored 21 points in the defeat.
Trailing by seven with under two minutes to play, Rosenberg and Kyle Castlin picked up back-to-back buckets to make it 76-63 with 1:14 on the clock. The teams traded free throws and turnovers to give the ball back to the Lions (4-5) down by four, leading to another Rosenberg bucket with 25 seconds remaining.
The Hawks' (5-2) Lamarr Kimble knocked down a pair from the charity stripe to extend the margin to 80-76. Lo sliced through the lane with eight seconds left pull Columbia within one possession before its full court trap forced Shavar Newkirk to fall out of bounds with five seconds to go.
Lo crossed over into the middle of the lane as time wound down, but was met by a pair of defenders and his shot was off the mark to end the game.
The game featured 13 lead changes throughout and the Lions were able to take a 30-38 lead into the locker room on strong performances from Jeff Coby and Lukas Meisner off the bench. Coby netted five points, two rebounds and drew a key charge, while Meisner grabbed seven rebounds in the opening stanza and finished with a career-best nine boards.
Aaron Brown scored a game-high 26 points on 11-of-16 shooting for Saint Joseph's. DeAndre' Bembry finished with 12 points, nine boards and eight assists.
