PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Maodo Lo scored a career-high 35 points, 24 coming in the first half, as the Columbia men's basketball team cruised to a 76-59 victory over Brown Friday night. The Lions (12-11, 4-5) earned its first sweep over the Bears (11-15, 2-7) since 2010.
Lo achieved a number of milestones on the night, shooting 14-of-20 from the floor to set a Pizzatola Sports Center record for field goals made, breaking the old mark of 13 held by Penn's Matt Maloney. The point total was also the most for a Columbia player since Dragutin Kravic scored 35 against Yale on Mar. 6, 2004.
Columbia came out with great intensity, sparked by Steve Frankoski diving for a loose ball early on, and jumped out to a 6-0 lead after a Kyle Castlin jumper with 17:20 remaining in the first half. After Brown knotted things up less than a minute later, the Lions used a 7-2 spurt to take control before Lo took over.
The junior guard either scored or assisted on the next seven baskets, giving Columbia 31-17 advantage as they led by 20 at the half.
Cedric Kuakamensah trimmed the Lions' lead to 53-39 with 16:12 to go, but that would be as close as the Bears would come.
Kuakamensah finished with 20 points, six boards and three blocks for Brown.
The Lions scored 22 points off of 15 Bears' turnovers. Jeff Coby was the only other Columbia player in double-figures with 13 points and Luke Petrasek added nine points, seven rebounds to go with three rejections.
Columbia takes on Yale on Saturday, February 21 at 7 p.m. The game will streamed with live video and audio on the Ivy League Digital Network.
Game notes: Lo moved all the way to 19th on the all-time scoring list and now has 1,041 points… Lo also cracked the top-10 in career steals with 98.
