
Jakl and Lu Selected As January Student-Athletes of Month

NEW YORK - Men's swimming's David Jakl and women's fencing's Margaret Lu have been tabbed Columbia Student-Athletes of the Month for January.
Jakl led the Lions to four consecutive dual-meet wins to go unbeaten in the month of January. The senior earned 10 victories in the pool, including five individual events and five relay events. In a 200 medely relay win against Brown on Jan. 24, Jakl and company finished with a new Uris pool record time of 1:29.16. The captain had a big day against Bucknell on Jan. 25, setting three Uris pool records in the 400 medley relay (3:18.66), 100 backstroke (49.09) and 50 freestyle (19.97). His stellar performances also garnered a Corvias ECAC Division I Men's Swimmer of Week accolade.
Lu aided the second-ranked Lions to a 10-0 weekend against top competition from Jan. 24-25. At the St. John's Invitational, where six of the top seven teams in the nation fenced, Lu helped Columbia defeat No. 4 St. John's (19-8), No. 7 Harvard (16-11), No. 5 Ohio State (15-12), No. 4 Penn State (16-11) and No. 1 Notre Dame (15-12). Lu posted a 9-2 record on the strip in Queens. The following day at the NYU Invitational, Lu went an unbeaten 12-0 including a win over Notre Dame's Lee Kiefer, the top foil fencer in the world, to help the Lion sweep the field. For her standout performances through Jan. 24-25, Lu was named the Corvias ECAC Fencer of Week.
