
Lightweight Fours Capture Silver to Highlight Day Two of IRA National Championships

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Columbia lightweight varsity four secured a silver medal in the grand final at the IRA National Championships Saturday afternoon. The Lions had four boats on Lake Mercer on the day – two from heavyweight and two lightweight crews.
LIGHTWEIGHTS
The varsity fours posted a time of 6:35.7 in the opening regatta, finishing just behind Yale for second place to earn a spot in the main final. In the finale, Columbia improved its time by 10 seconds, but so did the Bulldogs who topped the Lions by just 2.2 seconds to take the gold
In the grand (and only) final of the straight four regatta, Columbia placed just outside of medal contention in fourth. Princeton, Cornell and Yale were the top finishers.
The No. 2 varsity eights hit the water tomorrow morning in search of a medal for the third consecutive year.
HEAVYWEIGHTS
The varsity eight was among the elite crews in the nation in the first semifinal heat and finished sixth to the likes of Washington, Harvard, Northeastern, Yale and Cornell. The Lions will compete in the petite final tomorrow afternoon.
Second varsity eight won its final race of the championships, finishing first against Syracuse, Hobart and Drexel.
