ITHACA, N.Y. – The Columbia men's basketball team used 21-4 run that ran over two halves and drained 13 3-pointers in a 79-68 win at Cornell Saturday. The Lions (13-6, 2-0) were led by Maodo Lo, who finished with 18 points on 4-of-6 shooting from long range.
The teams traded blows in the first half, exchanging the lead four times in the opening 20 minutes. A pair of Joel Davis free throws gave the Big Red (7-9, 0-2) a 17-12 lead with 11:19 left in the period. Columbia responded with nine in a row, buoyed by 3-pointers from CJ Davis, Lo and Mullins to take a four-point lead.
David Onuorah put the exclamation point on a 12-2 run for Cornell, giving them a 29-23 lead with 3:16 on the clock before a counter by the Lions.
Davis started the rally with a wrap-around pass to a cutting Lo for a layup and Columbia knocked down another trio of shots from long-range to take a 36-31 advantage with just over a minute remaining and went into the locker room ahead, 36-33.
The Lions netted the first eight points of the second half to make it an 11-point game. However, Matt Morgan, who posted a game-high 26 points, kept Cornell in the game. Morgan dished to Troy Whiteside to pull the Big Red within 48-43 at the 13:38 marker, but Davis scored five points during a 9-2 spurt to restore a 57-45 cushion with at the midway point of the half.
From there, the teams were able to trade baskets and Columbia went on for its ninth win in its last 10 tries.
Luke Petrasek posted 16 points, going 6-of-9 from the floor, and added eight rebounds. Davis and Mullins each added 11 points.
Columbia converted on 54.2 percent (13-of-24) of their attempts from beyond the arc. Cornell held a 40-22 advantage in points in the paint.
