
Women's Swimming & Diving Pick Up Split In Season Opener

West Point, N.Y. – The Columbia women's swimming & diving team opened the season on Friday, Nov. 5 in a non-conference and Ivy League three-team dual meet race against Army and Penn. The Lions came away with a 1-1 split defeating for Army 190 -110, despite a loss to Penn, 173.50 – 126.50. Columbia's victory over marks its third straight against the Black Knights improving a stellar all-time series lead to 21-3.
Sophomore Kim Yang collected a team-high two victories on the day in one-meter and three-meter dives to lead the Lions. Yang (243.80) edged teammate Seanna Barnett (239.45) for her first one-meter dive victory and returned with a first-place score of 254.10 to take the three-meter diving crown.
In her signature 100 breastroke event, Jennifer Shahar is off to a great senior season picking up the win with a time of 1:04.40. First-year Helen Wojdylo was also impressive in the event with a third-place time of 1:05.94 in her first collegiate meet. Wojdylo grabbed a runner-up finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:23.74.
The Lions young talent continued to make their mark on the day as rookie Julia Samson earned her first collegiate victory in the 200 backstroke with a winning time of 2:02.52. Sophomore Jessica Antiles led all swimmers in the 200 I.M. with a top-time of 2:05.14. Antiles also led a number of impressive runner-up performances by the Lions with a time of 1:52.92 in the 200 freestyle. Trudi Patrick edged fellow senior Emily Clifford in the 200 butterfly with a runner-up time of 2:07.90.
In both relay events, the Lions picked up huge second-place points. The squad of Mary Ashby, Shahar, Samson and Alice Boutant combined for a time of 1:44.60 in the 200 medley relay, edged by only .25 seconds by Penn. In the 400 freestyle relay, the foursome of Ashby, Boutant, Kathleen O'Rourke and Shahar posted a time of 3:29.29.
Up next, the Lions (1-1) will travel to New Haven on Friday, Nov. 11 to take on Yale in a 5 p.m. dual-meet.
