NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Columbia men's basketball team suffered its first Ivy League loss, an 86-72 setback, at Yale Friday night. Senior Maodo Lo tied the Lions' (15-7, 4-1) single-game record with seven steals to go with 21 points and six rebounds.
The Bulldogs (14-5, 5-0) shot 61.5 percent from the floor, including 9-of-18 from downtown. Brandon Sherrod scored 25 points on 6-of-8 shooting and added eight boards. Sherrod set a an NCAA single-season record with 30 consecutive made field goals. Reigning Ivy League Player of the Year, Justin Sears, led the way with 27 points and seven rebounds.
Columbia manufactured six turnovers in the opening minutes and used a pair of free throws from Alex Rosenberg to take a 13-7 lead with 13:40 to play in the first half. However, Yale was powered by senior Brandon Sherrod, who converted on his first five shots of the game to set a NCAA single-season record with 30 consecutive made field goals, to help the Bulldogs regain the lead with just under 10 minutes before the half.
Yale finished the half making seven of their last 10 tries from the field, including an off-balance 3-pointer by Blake Reynolds, giving the Bulldogs a 41-33 edge at the break.
The Lions methodically chipped away in the second half and pulled within one-possession on a banked home 3-pointer from Lo at the 8:33 mark. Rosenberg, who finished with 11 points, made it 60-58 with a free-throw at the 6:44 mark, but that would be as close as Columbia would get.
A 14-2 run by Yale put the game away as they remain atop the conference standings.
The Bulldogs' strong shooting helped them hold a 35-23 on the glass. Yale committed 17 turnovers, but it only led to 14 Columbia points.
