NEW YORK – While the official season of Division I women's volleyball ends in the fall, the hard work and dedication of the Columbia volleyball team goes much further than just on-course performance as the Lions spend countless hours helping the community.
This spring, the Lions have joined forces with the St. Sebastian Sports Project, a non-profit organization that Columbia women's volleyball junior Sarah Gurbach's family help create in Los Angeles.
The organization helps fund inner city Catholic School sports teams for parochial K-8 schools, providing money for teams to help pay for day-to-day costs such as uniforms, coaches and referee fees, as well as helping run tournaments and coaching clinics to help improve the athletic programs in those schools.
Earlier this year, Gurbach and the Lions brought the St. Sebastian Sports Project to Our Lady Queen of Angels in East Harlem where the team helped run eight clinics for 40 girls on Friday afternoons.
“It was a huge success because we had the opportunity to teach girls a completely new sport and watch their skills and enthusiasm grow with each passing week,” said Gurbach. “Many of the eighth graders that are about to move on to high school told us that they will now be trying out for their high-school volleyball teams this fall.”
