Women Sweep, Men Win Four of Five at Philadelphia Invite

PHILADELPHIA, PA —The women's fencing team rolled out of Philadelphia without dropping a match, going 6-0 on the day while the men went 4-1 to cap off a full weekend of action for Columbia fencing.
After a long weekend filled with tough competition, the Lions will get time off before they gear up for Ivy League Championships which will be held at Princeton on February 10-11.
WOMEN'S RECAP (6-0)
The women's team started their day with a 25-2 rout of Wayne State. Foil and epee squads both went 9-0.
After falling to Notre Dame yesterday 14-13, the Lions got revenge in a big way today, defeating the Fighting Irish 17-10. The foil squad dropped just one bout, as Iman Blow and Ester Schreiber both were undefeated. Giana Vierheller did not drop a bout either.
Columbia went onto defeat Northwestern 17-10, and NYU 25-2.
The Lions got some revenge from last weekend as they defeated the Temple Owls 17-10. Schreiber went 3-0.
The squad rounded out the day with their second victory of the weekend over St. John's with a 22-5 victory. The foil trio of Schreiber, Quinn Crum and Binder swept the Johnnies, and Vierheller and Audrey Yun went 3-0 each in women's epee.
Ester Schreiber fenced in every single match today and finished with an outstanding 17-1 record. Giana Vierheller was undefeated on the day at 9-0, and dropped just one match the entire weekend, finishing with a 20-1 record. Audrey Yun (epee) and Iman Blow (foil) both had stellar outings, finishing at 11-1 on the day.
MEN'S RECAP (4-1)
The men's team came out firing in the first match of the day, defeating Wayne State 22-5. The foil trio of Sam Moelis, Sidarth Kumbla and Nolen Scruggs went 9-0. First-year Julian Maldonado won all three of his bouts as well.
The Lions defeated the No. 1 ranked Fighting Irish for the second time this weekend with a 16-11 victory today. Men's foil led the way at 6-3 as Sam Moelis won all three of his bouts. Gabe Canaux (epee) and Calvin Liang (sabre) also went undefeated against Notre Dame.
Columbia fell to NYU 17-10 in their third match of the day. Nolen Scruggs won all three of his bouts against the Violets.
The Lions rebounded with a 20-7 rout of Brown. The foil squad was 8-1 as Scruggs and Kumbla both won all their bouts, as did Porter Hesslegrave in epee and Liang in sabre.
The day ended on a high note for the Lions as they avenged yesterday's loss to the Johnnies with a 14-13 victory today. The foil squad paced the way with an 8-1 record as Kumbla went 3-0, Moelis won two bouts, and Albert Zhang picked up a win as well.
