Fencing tops NYU above Washington Square Park

The Lions pull ahead of the Violets in Columbia's first dual meet of the season, win 18-9 victory.

NEW YORK- Columbia fencing dominated it's first local meet of the season, taking home an 18-9 dual meet win Tuesday night against NYU at NYU's Kimmel Center.

The small squad had a strong showing, tallying a 7-2 win in men's foil, lost 5-4 in men's sabre, and a 9-0 win in men's epee.  On the women's side, the Lions took home an 8-1 win in sabre, a 5-4 win in epee, and a 5-4 win in foil despite only having two female foilists at the meet.

This meet is an annual matchup of the uptown and downtown programs and was hosted at Columbia last year. The two strips, alternated back and forth for an evening of comeback bouts from both sides. First-year fencer Ben Sherwin pulled ahead of star NYU epee fencer, Ian Sanders, winning his first collegiate bout 5-1.

Tonight's meet is a preview of the Columbia Invitational set to take place this Friday on Columbia's Morningside Heights campus. Competition begins at 5:00 p.m. in Dodge Fitness Center.
