NEW YORK – The Columbia wrestling team dropped a pair of tight matches today in the final two duals of the regular season.
The Lions now look ahead to the EIWA Championships on March 3-4 at Hofstra, as the team ends the regular season at 3-15.
Columbia vs. Harvard
A Columbia comeback fell short as Harvard escaped the Blue Gym with an 18-13 victory.
The Crimson opened up with a 6-0 lead, taking wins at 141 and 149 by decision. The Lions then got on the board first at 157, when Markus Scheidel tallied an 8-4 decision against Brock Wilson.
A trio of tight matches followed, two of which were taken by the Crimson.
Tyler Tarsi and Laurence Kosoy went to a sudden victory period in the 165-pound bout, as Tarsi finished a quick takedown in the extra frame to bump the lead to 9-3. Tyrel White got those team points back at 174, defeating two-time NCAA qualifier Josef Johnson, 4-1. At 184, Kanon Dean had three shots defended by Andrew Psomas, but a takedown in the final period propelled the Crimson senior to a 4-3 win.
With the Crimson holding a 12-6 lead, the Lions would fight back with a pair of victories at 197 and heavyweight. Michael Bulkin was came away with an 8-5 to cut the lead to three, before Garrett Ryan tilted the lead back Columbia's way with an 18-6 major decision over Angus Cowell.
The Lions held a 13-12 lead with two matches remaining, but Harvard went ahead at 125 with a Nolan Hellickson decision over Spencer Good. At 15-13, the match would be decided on a 133-pound bout between Alec Kelly and Ryan Friedman.
Kelly picked up a takedown in the first period, but Friedman was able to escape and add one of his own to lead 3-2 after one. In the second, Kelly was able to ride out Friedman the entire period, moving the clock to almost two minutes of advantage. The Columbia sophomore escaped in the third to tie the match 3-3, but a Friedman takedown in the third propelled him to a 5-4 win, as Harvard won the dual, 18-13.

After the Bears took the opening bout at 165, White evened the score at 3-3 thanks to a 4-2 decision over Bryce Rogers in his final match in the Blue Gym.
The Bears went on to post victories at 184 and 197, before a Ryan tech fall sent erupted the crowd. The heavyweight improved to 27-4 this season thanks to his 99th career victory.
Leading 9-8, the Bears picked up a major decision in the 125-pound bout, before a 2-0 decision from Kelly kept the match alive at 13-11. After JP Ascolese earned the first takedown of the match at 141, a takedown by Zeke Salvo led to a compromising position in the second period, which Salvo capitalized on for the fall, to lead 19-11.
