Softball Drops Extra Inning Thriller at Cornell

Taylor Troutt went 3-for-5, ending the season with a .500 batting average in Ivy League play.

ITHACA, N.Y. - The throw home was just late and Cornell was able to have an eighth-inning walk-off win in the series final against Columbia, 10-9.

After trailing 4-1 going into the top half of the fifth inning, the Lions bats came up huge, putting a five-spot on the scoreboard. Maria Pagane led off the inning with a single to right, following by an infield single by Amber Swinarski. Three batters later with a pair of outs in the frame, Taylor Trout added another infield single, which plated Pagane and moved Swinarski to third.

Max Ortega was up next, taking a walk and loading the bases for Alexandra Yule. The junior would clear the bases with a grand slam to right field, her fifth bomb of the season, leading to the five run fifth.

Cornell would answer in the bottom half of the inning with three runs of their own, making it a 7-6 lead for the Big Red heading into the sixth. The Lions would respond, plating three runners of their own with RBIs from Madison Gott, Sommer Grzybek, and Ortega, tilting the lead back in their favor at 9-7.

In the bottom of the sixth, Cornell went on to tie things up at 9-9, and after a scoreless seventh, the teams went to extra innings. The Lions could not find a baserunner in the eighth with three strikeouts in the top half, before the Big Red were able to plate the game-winning run. With Madeline Avery on third base, Rebecca Kubena hit a shot out to centerfield, for the sac fly, ending the game.

Swinarski and Troutt both went 3-for-5 on the afternoon, with Troutt ending the season batting .500 in Ivy League play. Yule went 2-for-4 with four RBI from the grand slam, while the loss in the circle went to Maura Lynch, who replaced Madison Canby in the fifth.
