NEW HAVEN, Conn. – On a milestone night for senior Chichi Ikwuazom, the Columbia volleyball team could not overcome Yale, falling to the Bulldogs in three sets (20-25, 17-25, 19-25) Friday at Lee Amphitheater.
The defeat drops Columbia to 10-6, 3-3 Ivy, on the season and snaps its three-match Ivy League winning streak. Yale improves to 9-6 with a 5-1 mark in the league.
Ikwuazom entered the contest one block shy of 300 and became the fourth Lion in program history to reach the milestone. Her 300th came midway through the second set and she now stands on 301, a block behind Kesi Neblett '17SEAS and two behind Monique Roberts '12BC in the career record books.
Â
Despite the individual achievement for Ikwuazom, Columbia had a hard time stringing together many points against the defending league champions. Yale outhit the Lions .378 to .215 and was led by Kathryn Attar's 12 kills. Sophomore Emily Teehan put down a match-high 13 kills for Columbia, marking the sixth straight match she has posted double figures.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â Yale scored five of the night's first six points and led by six, 11-5, for the first time on a Kathryn Attar service ace. The Lions fought back with three straight points on Vanessa Pan's serve to slice the deficit in half and clawed their way within two, 15-13, off Audrey Cheng's lone ace of the night. However, that would be as close as the set got, as the Bulldogs went on a 4-1 run to regain a five-point lead before going on to take the opener by as many.
Noelle Foster got the second set started with a kill but the lead was short lived. The Bulldogs went up for good at 3-2 and strung together five straight capped by an Attar kill to go up 11-5. A kill by Cheng ended the run before Ikwuazom's 300th block cut Yale's lead to 14-9. The two sides traded points for a while but it was Yale that would find the upper hand, winning four of five points late to take the second by eight and grab a two-set lead.
An early 5-all tie in the third was broken up by a 5-1 Bulldogs spurt to put the home side up 10-6. Columbia hung tough and scored three straight with the help of back-to-back Teehan kills to get within a pair, 14-12. Yale answered with three of the next four and outlasted the Lions down the stretch, putting away the match on Attar's 12th and final kill of the night.
