Columbia battles back from 21-0 first quarter deficit but Brown holds off the Lions the rest of the way for win; Josh Wainwright leads way for Lions with two touchdowns and season-high 143 yards receiving.

NEW YORK—Quarterback EJ Perry threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score as Brown jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead and held off Columbia the rest of the way for a 48-24 win Saturday at Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium.

The loss drops Columbia to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in Ivy League play, while Brown improves to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the Ivy League.

Brown scored the game's final 20 points, scored 14 points off Lions turnovers and answered several Columbia comeback attempts. Columbia battled back and cut its deficit to four points two times but Brown's offense answered both times with touchdowns. The Lions trimmed the lead down to 21-17, but Brown answered with a 70-yard touchdown run by Allen Smith right before halftime. Columbia cut its deficit to 28-24 in the third quarter on a 44-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Ty Lenhart to senior wide receiver Josh Wainwright, but the Bears put together a 75-yard, six-play drive which ended on a 49-yard pass from Perry to Jakob Prall.

Brown outgained Columbia 457-427 in yardage, 18-17 in first downs, and registered three turnovers (recovered two fumbles and intercepted a pass) to Columbia's one.

Brown took a quick 21-0 lead just seven minutes into the game. The Bears went up 7-0 on Columbia's second offensive play when Malcolm Brunson forced a fumble and Nick Messina recovered the ball and scampered 38 yards for a touchdown. After the Bears forced a three-and-out, Perry led Brown on a 64-yard, four-play drive which ended in a five-yard touchdown run by Allen Smith and gave the Bears a 14-0 lead. A 35-yard pass from Perry to LJ Harriott fueled the drive.

After a one-yard Columbia punt which was blocked, Brown took over at the Lions' 34-yard line and went up 21-0 following a two-yard touchdown run by Perry. The Bears drove 34-yards in seven plays and used a 26-yard pass from Perry to Dan Gemmell to setup the score.

Columbia finally got on the scoreboard when first-year placekicker Alex Felkins converted a 35-yard field goal with 9:42 to go before halftime. That made the score 21-3. The Lions went 55 yards in 11 plays and took advantage of a 32-yard pass from Lenhart to a diving Mike Roussos, which put Columbia inside the Brown 20-yard line.

Moments later, the Lions scored their first touchdown when sophomore running back Ryan Young burst through the right of the line and rambled for a 49-yard run touchdown run. The play was setup by a 30-yard pass from Lenhart to Wainwright down the center of the field.

Columbia cut the deficit to 21-17 when Lenhart found Wainwright for a 34-yard touchdown pass. Wainwright made a diving play on the ball while catching it in the end zone over his right shoulder. The score was setup when senior safety Hunter Lunsford intercepted a Perry pass, which put the Lions at the Brown 34-yard line.

With the Lions seemingly seizing the game's momentum, Brown answered when Allen Smith took the handoff and burst up the middle of the defense run for a 70-yard touchdown run. The play gave Brown a 28-17 halftime lead.

Columbia cut the deficit to 28-24 on a double reverse flea flicker touchdown pass from Lenhart to Wainwright. Wainwright caught the pass on the sideline, broke a tackle and sped past the Brown defense for the score.

It was all Brown the rest of the way as the Bears scored 20 unanswered points to close out the third quarter. The Bears immediately answered with a 49-yard touchdown pass from Perry to Jakob Prall for a 34-24 lead. On its next possession, Brown went up 41-24 on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Perry to Harriott. Then the Bears tacked a final touchdown on a seven-yard pass from Perry to Demitri Jackson.
