Columbia Wrestling finally opens up its dual meet season with a visit to Stanford, before taking part in the Roadrunner Open.
PALO ALTO, Calif. / BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – After nearly three weeks since opening the season, Columbia Wrestling is set to compete in its first dual meet of the 2019 season, as the "Nation's Oldest Program" heads to the west coast for a dual meet against Stanford (2-1) on Saturday, Nov. 23, before wrapping up the weekend with a visit to Bakersfield, California for the Bakersfield Open on Sunday, Nov. 24.
REVIEWING THE PREVIOUS: Columbia opened its 2019 season with a quick trip to Princeton, New Jersey, for the Princeton Open on Nov. 3, hosted by Princeton. While there, the Lions were led by Matt Kazimir, who at 141 pounds, took the title to cap off a long but successful day for the Lions.
Joining Kazimir in placing were six other Lions giving Columbia seven who placed at the event. Placing third for the Lions was David Berkovich (157 pounds), Kyle Mosher (165 pounds) and Daniel Herman (285 pounds), while Joe Manchio placed fifth at 125 pounds and Riley Jacops (157 pounds) and Sam Wustefeld (197 pounds) each placed sixth in their respective weight classes to round out the strong day for the Lions.
RANKING AT 141: Kazimir's strong performance at the Princeton Open provided him with some attention in the national rankings, as Amateur Wrestling News ranked him the No. 19 141-pounder in the country. That makes him the highest ranked 141-pounder in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association, which considers six publications, FloWrestling, TrackWrestling, Intermat, The Open Mat, Wrestling Insider Newsmag and Amateur Wrestling News when putting together the EIWA rankings for each weight class.
WHAT THE CARDINAL BRINGS: Stanford enters the dual meet with Columbia having already taken part in three dual meets and a tournament and the Cardinal will be joining the Lions at the Roadrunner Open following Saturday's dual meet. Stanford's previous two matches have been wins for the Cardinal, with Stanford taking down San Francisco State, 29-10, and the then-ranked No. 17 North Carolina Tar Heels, 21-11. The Cardinal also took first, with 144 points, at the Battle at The Citadel to open the 2019-20 season.
All-time the Lions lead the series 3-0, with this being the fourth meeting between the two programs, with all three previous meetings taking place either at Palo Alto, California or, as in the case of the first meeting between the two, at Davis, California. The Lions took the last meeting between these two sides, 22-18, on Jan. 10, 2009.
Saturday's dual meet will take place outdoors, in conjunction to Stanford's football game against California.
PREVIEWING THE ROADRUNNER OPEN: The Lions will wrap up their weekend with a visit to Bakersfield to take part in the Roadrunner Open, hosted by CSU Bakersfield. The meet, which is slated for a 12:00 p.m. EST start time, will see the Lions joined by Stanford, Cal Poly, California Baptist, Embry-Riddle, Freson State, Gardner-Webb, Life Pacific, Menlo, San Francisco State, Simpson and Vanguard.
