NEW YORK — Columbia men's basketball and Princeton both battled through off-shooting nights, but the Tigers came away with a 55-43 victory over the Lions Friday night. Columbia hit on just 30.5 percent shooting from the floor, while Princeton shot 35.8 percent.
Patrick Tapé led the Lions (6-11, 1-2) with 12 points, five boards and two blocks. Quinton Adlesh, who made his first start of the season, finished with 11 points.
"Princeton played well in the first half, but I thought we responded pretty well in the second half," said head coach Jim Engles. "I feel like we got some decent looks that just didn't fall and we missed some layups. I was pleased with our defense, especially in the second half."
The Tigers (11-5, 3-0) led wire-to-wire and raced out to a 20-6 advantage after a layup from Richmond Aririguzoh with 9:34 left in the first half. Columbia closed within nine twice, but Princeton closed the frame with a 9-2 run to hold a 34-17 advantage into the locker room.
After the break, Columbia came out aggressive on defense and forced several turnovers to pull within 36-26 on a Randy Brumant turnaround jumper at the 15:35 mark. The Lions trimmed the deficit down to seven on a pull-up jumper from Gabe Stefanini near the midway point of the second. However, that would be as close as Columbia would come.
Princeton netted the next two baskets and the Lions went cold again down the stretch to keep the Tigers undefeated in Ivy League play.
Myles Stephens posted a game-high 17 points and added 13 boards for Princeton. The Tigers held a 48-31 advantage on the glass and outscored Columbia 12-2 on second-chance opportunities.
Columbia wraps up its home stand Saturday, February 2 against Penn. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by clicking here or calling 888-LIONS-11. The contest will be shown live on ESPN+.
